Movement – Breath – Stillness
Asana – Pranayama – Meditation
In these 2 and a half hour workshops we will do yoga postures to bring freedom to the body and the breath, then with that freedom explore pranayama and its effects on the body and mind, and with those effects on the mind, sit in meditation. We will have a real opportunity to experience how these three ‘limbs’ of yoga are interlinked, how each can prepare us for the next. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Ch2 v2) says ‘When prana moves, the mind moves. When prana is still, the mind is still…’
Each session will focus on a different pranayama. Pranayamas explored will be ujjayi (victorious breath), viloma (ladder breath), sheetali/sheetkari (cooling breath), bhamari (humming bee breath), kapalabhati/bhastrika (bellows breath), nadi shodhana/chandra bhedana/surya bhedana (balancing/activating left and right sides).
Each pranayama is very different and has different effects and applications. We will explore all this and also look at what the various yoga texts have to say.
